A Guide to Guggenheim Bilbao's Iconic Design and Exhibits

Guggenheim Bilbao

43.2687° N, 2.9340° W

The Guggenheim Bilbao seems to proudly reveal itself as you cross La Salve Bridge upon entering this exquisite city. This titanium clad landmark was designed by architect Frank Gehry and sits upon the former site of an industrial wharf along the curving Nervión River — with its magnigicent curving lines it has a nautical feel.

The landscape and sculpture installations on the exterior are as stunning as the modern and contemporary artwork that fills the museum. At the entry to the museum, Jeff Koons floral Puppy welcomes visitors — this sweet oversized “puppy” seems to have become the mascot for Bilbao! Be sure to see Jeff Koons other sculpture on the river side of the museum as well — the colorful Tulip installation. As you walk down the stairs towards the Nervión you’ll find Tall Tree and Eye by Anish Koor — the tall silver ball sculpture — this glassy piece reflects the hues of the landscape and the water beneath it.

One of my favorite things was just around the bend —- because it was so unexpected! As I was taking pictures, a sea of fog began to surround me. I was standing in the middle of Fujiko Nakaya’s Fog Sculpture! At first, there’s nothing there and then all of a sudden the fog begins to quietly envelop you. Then as quietly as it appeared it begins to dissipate….. It was fun to watch others surprised by it as well.

Just beyond is the gigantic spider sculpture - arachnophobes beware! Maman is the work of artist Louise Bourgeois. Made of metal and standing 30 feet high, she reminds you of something out of a science fiction movie. This is also the perfect vantage point for another view of La Salve Bridge. La Salve (also know as The Prince of Spain Bridge) is an architectural work in itself — be sure to view it at night when the red arch puts on a running light display.

To the north of the bridge, you’ll also find this beautiful mural with its patchwork of color against a green backdrop and these two characters who seem to be deep in conversation….

Finally, be sure to make your way inside the Guggenheim —- photography is not permitted —- it has elaborate windows with vast views and three floors of contemporary and modern art. There are permanent works as well as special exhibitions so, check there website to stay up to date with current installations.

There is also an outdoor restaurant which has good food and is a nice spot to sit down and decide what you’ll do next in the day over a nice meal.

Tomorrow, we’re off to Casco Viejo and tasting our way through Pintxhos at El Mercado de la Ribera.

Happy Travels!
